MICHELIN tire grinding robot

It was a project of 4 robots for carving short series of tires with customized drawings. Tires up to 4.5 meters in diameter. Used for testing and development of new tires.

In this case the technical challenge was that the robot has to adapt to the tire. In other words, the tread depth is measured with respect to the tread of the original smooth tire, and this tread is not perfect and depends on many factors such as pressure, position during machining, etc.

The solution was to incorporate a scanner in the robot itself to perform an inspection and 3D reconstruction of the tire just before machining in the same environmental conditions in which the machining will be performed. So the cutting paths are automatically recalculated and adapted to the tire.

Also the use of hot blades and automatic blade change was integrated into the robot.
